Choosing custom packaging materials is not simply a matter of selecting paper, metal, or plastic from a list. The complete package may include several layers, coatings, liners, closures, printed surfaces, and added components. The right specification depends on the product being packed, intended use, handling conditions, destination market, presentation goals, quantity, and confirmed production route.
The same principle applies to custom packaging printing methods. A method name alone does not tell you whether it fits a particular structure, artwork, quantity, finish, or color expectation. Use this guide to organize the questions, then confirm the actual options for the exact product and project.
Start with the Package and Intended Use
Begin with the packaging job rather than a material trend or print effect. Describe:
- the product being packed;
- whether the package is primary, secondary, service, retail, shipping, or presentation packaging;
- how it will be filled, closed, opened, stored, displayed, and transported;
- known size, capacity, or dimensional requirements;
- expected handling conditions;
- destination market and any required documentation;
- brand and presentation priorities;
- estimated quantity and artwork versions.
This context allows the supplier to identify which structures and production routes can be reviewed. A material that is suitable for one product, filling method, or market should not be assumed to fit another.
If several packaging formats belong to one program, write a separate requirement for each item. A cup, canister, tin, pouch, sleeve, or outer presentation piece may need its own construction, print process, dieline, quantity, approval, and delivery scope even when the visual identity is shared.
A Material Name Is Not a Complete Construction
Buyers often begin with a broad material label such as paper, paperboard, metal, or plastic. That is a useful starting vocabulary, but it does not describe the complete package.
A full construction may also involve:
- multiple material layers or components;
- an inner or outer coating;
- a liner, insert, lid, closure, seal, or valve;
- an adhesive or joining method;
- a printed label, sleeve, wrap, or directly printed surface;
- a protective or decorative finish;
- assembled and separately packed parts.
Ask the supplier to name the complete construction used in the quotation, including any component that is supplied separately. If an alternative is recommended, ask what changes in function, appearance, printing, documentation, packing, cost, or availability.
Do not infer product safety, recyclability, compostability, barrier performance, temperature suitability, or certification from the broad material name alone. Those statements require exact, scope-matched evidence.
Define Functional and Presentation Requirements
Separate what the package must do from what you would like it to look like.
Functional questions
- What product contacts the package, and under what conditions?
- What strength, rigidity, flexibility, closure, or protection is required?
- How will the package be filled, handled, stacked, stored, or shipped?
- Which components must be compatible with one another?
- Are there product-, use-, or market-specific documents to review?
Presentation questions
- Which areas are visible to the customer?
- How much artwork coverage is needed?
- Are several SKUs, sizes, flavors, or language versions involved?
- Which colors are important to the brand system?
- Are any finishes essential, and which are optional?
- Must several packaging formats feel visually coordinated?
Turn each requirement into a written priority: required, preferred, optional, or open. This makes it easier to compare alternatives without losing the original project need.
Understand the Role of the Printing Method
Terms you may encounter include flexographic, offset or lithographic, digital, gravure, and screen printing, along with indirect decoration such as labels, sleeves, or wraps. These terms describe different production approaches, but they are not a menu that applies equally to every package.
Ask the supplier to identify:
- the printing or decoration method for the exact product;
- whether the artwork is printed directly or applied as another component;
- the printable area and number of surfaces;
- how process colors, confirmed spot colors, or special inks are handled;
- whether plates, cylinders, screens, setup, or other prepress elements apply;
- which quantities and artwork versions suit the proposed route;
- which coatings or finishes are compatible with the confirmed process;
- what proof or reference is available before production.
For example, flexographic printing is a complete workflow involving image carriers or plates, inks, metering, substrates, press conditions, and drying or curing. Simply writing “flexo” does not define the plate, ink, substrate, color target, print coverage, or quality criteria for the project. The same caution applies to any method name.
The best method is therefore not a universal winner. It is the method that is confirmed for the product and can meet the project's artwork, quantity, quality, timing, and commercial requirements under a clear specification.
Compare Artwork Coverage, Colors, and Versions
Artwork scope affects both production planning and comparison between quotations.
Confirm:
- which panels or surfaces are printed;
- whether the design uses limited areas or broad edge-to-edge coverage;
- the number of process and confirmed spot colors;
- whether white ink, underprinting, or another base treatment is required and available;
- the number of designs, sizes, languages, or SKU versions;
- whether common artwork elements can be coordinated without assuming one dieline fits every format;
- the file and proof workflow for each version.
Do not treat a logo-only price as comparable with a quotation for broad coverage and multiple versions. Keep the product, size, material, method, coverage, color scope, finish, and quantity consistent when comparing suppliers.
Once the exact format is confirmed, use the Artwork Guidelines for dielines, file organization, images, fonts, bleed, safe areas, finish callouts, and proof preparation.
Plan Color Across Different Materials
A shared color reference can support visual coordination, but it does not create identical results across every material or print process. Screen displays emit light; printed colors depend on inks, substrate, coating, surface, finish, and production conditions.
When color matters:
- identify the important brand color and the agreed reference;
- confirm the material and print process for each package;
- ask what proof, drawdown, sample, or production reference is applicable;
- record which differences are expected or still open;
- review each packaging format separately before approving the overall system.
Avoid phrases such as “exact color guaranteed” unless a specific, documented tolerance and approval method are part of the commercial agreement. A digital proof is useful for layout and callout review, but it is not an unconditional promise of the final printed appearance.

Review Finishes and Added Components
Finishes can be decorative, functional, or both. Terms may include varnish, coating, foil, emboss, deboss, white ink, cutout, window, label, sleeve, insert, closure, or another project-specific treatment. Availability depends on the exact product and production route.
For every proposed finish, ask:
- What is the intended visual or functional purpose?
- Is it compatible with the confirmed material and print method?
- Which area receives the treatment?
- How should it be identified in the artwork?
- Does it require a separate layer, callout, setup, tool, or proof?
- Is it included in the quoted scope?
- Does it affect assembly, packing, or delivery?
Separate required finishes from optional upgrades. Request a base version and an alternative when that makes the decision clearer. Do not allow an attractive visual effect to obscure product compatibility, evidence, cost, or delivery questions.
Use Samples and Proofs for the Right Questions
No single sample or proof confirms every characteristic.

Confirm the type, purpose, cost, shipping, timing, and limitations before ordering or approving it. A sample from another product or supplier should not be treated as proof of the proposed configuration.
Ask for Scope-Matched Documentation
If a technical, food-contact, environmental, or certification document is required, state the need early. Review the exact product, material, structure, supplier, intended use, target market, issuing organization, document date, and validity period.
Ask:
- Which product and material does the document cover?
- Does it match the proposed supplier and construction?
- Which use and market are included?
- Is the document current?
- Does a coating, liner, ink, adhesive, or component change its relevance?
- Is the public claim you want to make actually supported by the evidence?
Do not transfer a document from one product, material, supplier, or market to another. If the evidence is not available or does not match, keep the statement pending rather than replacing it with a vague environmental or safety claim.
Prepare a Material and Printing Brief
Use this checklist before asking for a recommendation or quotation:
- product being packed and intended use;
- packaging format, size, capacity, and structure when known;
- required and preferred functional characteristics;
- target market and documentation needs;
- estimated quantity and quantities to compare;
- material or construction preferences, clearly marked as open where needed;
- artwork status, coverage, colors, and number of versions;
- required and optional finishes or components;
- sample or proof objective;
- destination and target timing;
- open questions and acceptable alternatives.
